Meet the Team

Katherine D. Harris is Director of Public Programming, Outreach & Advocacy for the College of Humanities & the Arts and Professor of Literature & Digital Humanities at San José State University. Her teaching and research explore literature and technology, from nineteenth-century print culture and women’s voices to contemporary debates around artificial intelligence and ethics. She is the author of Forget Me Not and co-editor of the award-winning Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities. At SJSU, she leads H&A in Action, fostering cross-disciplinary programming and community engagement across a large urban public campus. She previously chaired the California Open Educational Resources Council, advancing statewide textbook affordability legislation across the CSU, UC, and Community College systems, and founded the Digital Humanities @ CSU Consortium connecting faculty across all 23 campuses. Mary Anderson is Associate Dean of Faculty Success and Research for the College of Humanities & the Arts, a Professor of Theatre and Dance, and an advisor to AI-ET leadership structure, with particular focus on faculty development and multi-tiered mentorship strategies.

Janet Stemwedel is Professor and Chair of Philosophy at San José State University, focusing on ethical dimension of scientific practice. She earned PhDs in Chemistry (1994) and Philosophy (2001) from Stanford, and in 2017 was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for “distinguished contributions to the philosophy of science and ethics, and for exceptional efforts to promote the public understanding of science and scientists in culture.”
At SJSU, she’s Director of the Center on Ethics, Vice Chair of University Council of Chairs and Directors, Faculty Rights Chair and Vice President of California Faculty Association, and Vice Chair of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee. She serves on the Board of Directors of Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research, and has served on the Governing Board of the Philosophy of Science Association and on the Executive Board of the American Philosophical Association.
Dr. Shannon Miller is the Dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts and Professor of English and Comparative Literature at San José State University. Committed to the values of the California State University system, Dr. Miller sees San José State University as an engine for social mobility and for producing the next generation of engaged citizens, practicing humanities, and creators of the arts. Before coming to San José State, Shannon Miller chaired the Department of English at Temple University for 6 years; she began teaching at Temple University in 1993. Dr. Miller earned her M.A. and Ph.D. (1991) in Renaissance Literature at UC Santa Barbara, and her B.A. in English at Dartmouth College. She has also taught at Albion College, Michigan, at the University of Utah, and for the University of Pennsylvania in a summer London program.
