Definitions of the impact of research in today’s data-intensive, globally-connected world are evolving. When considering the future direction of research programs, organizations must evaluate which metrics are true indicators of success and their relative merit. At the same time, researchers and organizations have shared concerns around ethical practices for research evaluation. Vast sets of publication and patent data can now be joined with data on societal and scholarly engagement with research findings. As open science emerges, research programs’ contribution to open data sets may also be valued.
